FAQS about our yoga classes, Dulwich:
What’s the structure of the yoga class?
The pace of the yoga class begins slow with a few Yin poses, the energy then gradually builds throughout the warm up leading onto a dynamic and creative mandala sequence, mandala in Sanskrit means “circle”, therefore you can expect a creative circular flow, often moving around the mat in 360-degree sequences. Towards the final section of the practice we slow the pace down again as we explore seated poses. The final part of the practice is focuses on mindfulness and meditation as we close with pranayama and Savasana / relaxation.
What’s the purpose of the class?
The purpose of the class is individual to each person. I aim to design a class that acts as a detox from the working week and offers an opportunity to be in the present moment. The varied structure of the class helps support the nervous system, learn breath work, enhance focus, and improve overall well-being. You will find pockets of peace and rest that will allow you to find more awareness moment to moment, but also dynamic, creative moments that challenge the body and boost energy levels, leaving you feeling both revitalised and balanced.
How often are the yoga classes in Dulwich?
At present, there is only one weekly yoga class at Studio Om, held every Saturday from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM. Occasionally, the class is held on Sunday—please refer to the booking sheet for more information. If you'd like me to add more yoga classes in Dulwich to the schedule, please contact me and let me know which day of the week you are most interested in.
Do I need to bring my own yoga mat/equipment?
Yes please! In an effort to be a more sustainable yoga class please bring your own mat. This saves on the plastic and harsh chemicals typically required to produce enough mats for one studio. If however, you would like to come and do not have your own mat please email me and I can reserve you a spare one on a first come first served basis. Lastly, if you like to practice with a yoga strap and blocks please bring your own to class. Thank you for your cooperation.
What level is it?
The yoga class is designed to cater to a range of levels, there’s plenty of opportunity to try more challenging balances and inversions, meanwhile if that’s not your cup of tea there’s plenty of modifications too. As this is an all levels class, a small amount of experience in yoga is recommended but not necessary.
The benefits of yoga
Yoga can have enormous benefits to our physical, emotional, and mental health, making it the ideal form of exercise for those who are looking for more than physical activity. Some of yoga's most notable benefits include:
Mind-Body Connection
Yoga is an excellent path for the practising of mindfulness and introspection. This helps in the enhancement of self-awareness, allowing you to foster a deeper connection with your mind, body, and emotions.
Physical Benefits
Improved Flexibility
Yoga can help to improve flexibility through the stretching and lengthening of muscles. It can also help you to loosen tight muscles and reduce stiffness that you have experienced due to injuries or health conditions.
Better Posture
Yoga helps in improving posture through poses which encourage better alignment of the body. It will also give you a better awareness of how you sit and stand, thus helping alleviate frequent back and neck pain.
Increased Balance and Coordination
The poses that you will learn in our yoga classes will help to enhance your stability and coordination. Not only can this improve your movement, but it can reduce the risk of balance loss while you age.
Improved Breathing
Yoga involves the practice of breathing exercises, and not only can this promote better breathing and relaxation, but can also improve your lung capacity and respiratory health.
Mental and Emotional Benefits
Reduced Stress
Yoga can be a great way to reduce stress, as one of its key aims is the promotion of relaxation through breathing, meditation, and movement.
Improved Focus and Concentration
One of the most important uses of yoga is as a tool for meditation. This means that engaging in yoga can help to improve your mental clarity and help you focus on the here and now. This ability to focus and think clearly will, in turn, help to enhance your concentration and cognitive function.
Emotional Stability
Engaging in regular yoga practice can help to promote better emotional resilience through the management of anger, frustration, and other negative emotions.
Better Sleep Quality
Getting a good night's sleep is one of the most important things that we can do for our overall well being, and yoga has been shown to improve sleep patterns. It does this by helping to calm the nervous system and reduce stress, allowing you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer.
